It’s not every day my pens receive an invitation to appear in a magazine. They were excited. But when I showed them what the magazine looked like, they fussed over not being minty new and scuff-free. It’s hard to reassure inanimate objects, so I didn’t even try. I just wiped them clean, sent them off with the magazine crew in a pen case, and hoped they would behave.

The art director created a metaphorical spider web to act as a backdrop for the pens, alluding to my hoarding tendencies.

I thought Philip, the photographer, captured the Pelikan M1005 demo very well. I know from all my fiddling how hard it is to shoot demonstrators.

My right hand managed to make it in one of the shots, in a supporting role.

The magazine will come out in time to let people plan holiday gifts. I’ll let you know when. Thanks to David Celdran, Patty and the rest of the Vault team – the pens and I had a great time.
