Thank you, Julie of the Peaceable Writer blog, for donating this MacNiven and Cameron Waverley pen to Pens for Aid.
"They came as a boon and a blessing to men,
The Pickwick, the Owl, and the Waverley Pen."Â
Sheaffer historians will point out that the upturned Sheaffer nib was inspired by that on the Waverley. The pen for auction was part of a batch that was produced as eyedroppers in the 50s, for export to tropical climates where rubber sacs expired regularly. The nib is the distinctive leaf shape (it reminds many of today's elastic nibs) and it is semi-flexible, with a width from fine to medium. Julie added an O ring to the pen to guard against leaking. Here's her lovely description:
I bought the pen NOS, and it's been inked/used twice. The pen looks pretty much as I received it, except I added an o-ring as you can see in some of the photos. There may be a few micro-scratches but not anything significant, IMHO.Â
Barrel imprint reads: Â "Waverley, Cameron, Made in Great Britain"
Nib imprint reads: Â "Waverley, 14ct, Made in Great Britain"
The barrel holds about 3ml of ink. Capped the length is 13.3cm; uncapped 12.4cm; posted 16.2cm.
The pen writes on either side of the nib, and it is super smooth on the "reverse" side of the nib (holding the pen upside down). It's a nice vintage fine point. There is some flex to the nib, but all that is lost on non-flexer me. I'd send a handwriting sample but it may not be a good thing to see my handwriting. 🙂
It also comes with an unused glass eyedropper that came to me with the pen.
I have one of these myself and can attest to the smoothness of the nib. Must be from the slight upturn and the way the iridium is shaped.
The pen will ship from the US. Your surprise goodies will ship from Manila.
Please bid generously! I want to encourage you to bid by setting the starting price low. You're not just buying a pen, you're donating to the relief efforts of the Philippine Red Cross for Typhoon Haiyan survivors. IMPORTANT: I’ve been using a personal PayPal account to handle the donations and PayPal has just sent me an email asking if I’m a nonprofit.  We’ll need to adjust the payment mechanics while I’m resolving this with them. Winning bidders will need to send the payment to the Red Cross (ushare.redcross.org.ph) directly, then email me their receipt. Thank you for understanding!
(Please note: I am not a professional seller, this is the first time I am using this Wordpress auction plugin, I've tested it and so far it works. But if you have any concerns at all, email me stat: leighpod at good ol' gmail.)
