Dashboard Confessional’s song accompanied me on the
flight home from Singapore. Appropriately, it was then I realized I fear being
with my countrymen aboard planes. Too much noise. Too much conversation at
impolite volume. Too much moving around. Case in point: when the reminder came
over the flight PA system to fasten our seatbelts, as we were coming in for a
landing, two Filipinos immediately stood up, opened their respective overhead
compartments and started pulling down their luggage. I told my sister,
afterward, that it was the same mindset that made many Filipino drivers step on
the gas when the traffic light turned yellow.
